The Great Laundry Debate

Ah! I wish my laundry space looked like this!

One of my goals for the new year is to get a handle on our laundry. Right now we just have baskets in the rooms and bathroom upstairs, let them fill up, and then on Sunday do like 5 loads of laundry. It is time consuming, a pain to sit down and fold all of that at once, and is really a challenge since Gabby and AJ share a lot of the same clothes. So I am trying to come up with a new solution.

My idea is to assign each person a laundry basket and only their clothing goes in there, Then each day of the week one person's laundry will be done, making the sorting of laundry no longer an issue and allowing Gabby to be able to fold and put her own clothes away. One load a day is a lot nicer sounding to me than 5 or six. Plus I can keep an eye on AJ, who has many outfit changes throughout the day do no reason at all.... her clothing pile is always the largest and most of it was probably perfectly clean.

How do you handle laundry at your house? What is the easiest ways to tackle all the kids clothes? Mommies with little girls, do you have a "costume changer"?

  1. I did have a costume changer. I don't anymore. It used to drive me crazy and now I argue with her that the outfit is dirty and needs to be washed.

I deal with laundry by having it collected every morning and doing a load each day. We alternate which bed gets changed each day. There is 9 of us and 7 beds, soon to be 8 beds.

I tried various laundry baskets but they all ended up in my room. It is easier to send the kids to each room and collect the days laundry. I bring mine down in the morning after my bath.

  2. We have 1 set of laundry baskets and they are labelled whites, darks & colours. Clothes go straight into the correct basket and once its full it goes in the machine. I don't like doing more than 1 wash per day as its just too much to process in one day as you are finding out. Having 2 girls the coloured basket gets filled the quickest but it doesn't matter which one it is I just wash the fullest each day.

  3. We have one hamper upstairs where the clothes go. I usually do one load of laundry a day. I like your idea though! Sounds very organized.

  4. we have a laundry chute so we just put it all down the chute and each day when i'm in the basement doing the diapers, i glance at the basket that catches the chute laundry.. if i can see the laundry sticking out, i grab it and throw in a load. i'm usually washing a load every other day or so. sometimes every day.. just depends on how quickly it fills up.

  5. wow im jealous with all those ppl you only have 5 or 6 loads on one day. i was mon,tue and fri. usually fri being my best laundry day since i am not exhausted from working the night before. i am sure i wash plenty of clean things. my youngest who is a boy but with all the changing of clothes you would think is a girl. i can not have him get ready until we are about to go somewhere cause the first thing to go is his shirt and then he must put on another, his socks are another big issue. if he could live in a nudist colony i think he would.
i wash it all together and sort it. jojo who is 6 get a big pile and puts it away, justin who is 4 gets sorted piles that he puts away.
